California-born Doris Rosenthal was trained by artists George Bellows and John Sloan at New York’s Art Students League, and painted everyday life in rural Mexico between the 1930s to 1960s, sometimes riding on the back of a burro to reach remote villages. Rosenthal received Guggenheim fellowships that financed her travel in Mexico, where she painted scenes of children at school, crowded train cars, and work in the fields and plantations. The exhibition features more than 50 works from her family’s collection, many newly restored.
